BE ‘BOUT IT
BE BOUT IT
“Be Bout It” is a choreographic production by Kelsa “K-Soul” Rieger-Haywood and Daniel “BRAVEMONK” Haywood.
This work, performed by prominent members of the local street dance community, utilizes freestyle, and other improvisational techniques to explore the ideas of lineage, accountability, and community.
This production initially debuted in 2017 as part of the Presenting Series at The Dance Center of Columbia College Chicago. I was a member of the original ensemble, but this round I wanted to take up a different role!
“The sound score traces the genealogy of Wynton Marsalis’ sample in the street dance anthem “Hot Music” by S.O.H.O., and in so doing, asks us to consider the complexities of borrowing and the full-circle nature of time.”
These concepts are visually represented through the influence of working class elements, as a means to nurture specific aspects of the lineage between Jazz and Hip-Hop. This was my interpretation of those ideas along with creative direction of the choreographers.
